Healthy Habits... Wear teal toes in Sept.

As I go through my daily blogging routine (or this time catching up on blogs) I came across many blogs talking about Sept. being Ovarian Cancer Awareness Month. Which reminded me. I have no idea how I haven't blogged about this yet. But i am a HUGE fan of big brother. Which the season finale ended this week (more about this later). But a lady from my home town was on it. Can you believe it. No, I do not know her... but YES, I will be on the look out for her. Anyway.. the reason she is on the show is b/c she battled Ovarian Cancer. During her chemo she said when she gets through everything she is going to be on Big Brother... and that she did. Although she didn't win, She did make it to the Jury house and she made her hometown proud. This is a picture of Kathy from Big Brother 12. Should be heading home soon!

So even though she is a survivor I will wear my teal toes for her! I thankfully have not had anyone close to me suffer this illness. But with my profession we do hear about it all the time.

So I thought i would share a little bit of info for you Healthy Habits!....

Ovarian Cancer, known as the "Silent Killer," is the leading cause of death from gynecologic cancers in the United States and is the fifth leading cause of cancer death among U.S. women. The American Cancer Society estimates that 21,880 women will be diagnosed with ovarian cancer in the U.S. in 2010 and about 13,850 women will die from the disease. It is an insidious disease that can strike without warning or cause. The symptoms of ovarian cancer are often vague and subtle, making it difficult to diagnose. Symptoms include:

  • Bloating

  • Pelvic or abdominal pain

  • Difficulty eating or feeling full quickly

  • Urinary symptoms (urgency or frequency)

There is no effective screening test for ovarian cancer but there are tests which can detect ovarian cancer when patients are at high risk or have early symptoms. Until we have better early detection tools, all women should be educated about the disease so they can achieve early diagnosis and successful treatment. A woman’s lifetime risk of ovarian cancer is 1 in 67. Listen to your body. Do not ignore symptoms!
